Hot Summer, Cool Beauty Trends
Baby, it’s hot outside. But oh-so-cool fashionistas are chilling by staying colorful, fun, and fresh—these are the beauty buzzwords for summer 2008. And the beauty professionals at Salon Success Academies, a leading Southern California beauty school, are sending out a trend alert for short funky bobs, pop art nails, earth-friendly cosmetics, and more.
Nail Styles
Bold artsy red, blue, orange, or yellow nail polish is best displayed on short, square nails. Remember that they’ll need re-doing every three to five days or so. Show off your glamorous toes in stylish thong sandals, mighty gladiator sandals, or slinky open-toes. Bright accessories are in, so you can match your fingernails to a hot-pink scarf, hot yellow bag, or splashy aqua scarf.
Salon Success says: Go for extra-shiny, vinyl-look varnishes. Ask your nail technician how to protect your nails between visits.
Hairstyling Trends
The classic bob—or wild a la punk chop—is a carefree hot-weather hairstyle choice, but if you’re not willing to commit to a cut, choose a messy updo or bun. Tone your tresses for brighter shine, or add intense highlighting.
Salon Success says: Short hair needs volume for extra style. Work closely with your hairdresser to create a cut that maximizes your hair’s fullness. Crank up the volume a notch further by using enhancing products that can provide lift and shine.
Golden Skincare
How can you get glowing, golden skin with a sun-kissed look, but without soaking up UV rays? Cheat by using shimmering self-tanners, bronzers, potions, and lotions. Chic coral lips and nourishing tinted lip balms accent your glowing skin.
Salon Success says: Boost your skin’s appearance with a facial massage, which will give you a brighter, healthier complexion. Your esthetician also might recommend other treatments, such as paraffin wax mask or European facial.
Organic Beauty
Yes, you can go green without sacrificing quality. Mother nature will be pleased when you choose organic skincare and body products, made with no chemical preservatives and eco-friendly packaging. Cheat the aging process with serums that contain botanical ingredients to reduce fine lines and wrinkles, while supporting the renewal of skin cells.
Salon Success says: Ask your esthetician which organic creams, lotions, gels, masks, or mists are best for your skin type.
The bottom line? Your cosmetology professional is the expert to turn to for advice on beauty tips and trends. And just think, if you’re considering a career in manicuring, esthetics, or hairdressing, you’ll be in the know in the world of fashion and beauty. “Salon Success teaches the latest techniques, life skills, and client-base management, “ says Robert Gross, owner and president of Salon Success. “We are training students to prepare for the realities of the industry while still learning all the current and upcoming trends.”

Spabeautyschools.com Featured School of the Week April 30, 2007: Vogue Beauty College
If becoming a makeup artist, beauty salon owner or beauty image consultant has seemingly been a dream too far from reach, then allow Vogue Beauty College to turn your dreams into reality! With eight campuses located throughout Texas and New Mexico, Vogue Beauty College offers six certification programs, including comprehensive courses in cosmetology, manicuring, and skin care. Its full 1,500-hour course in cosmetology includes haircutting and styling, shampooing/hair-scalp treatments, hair coloring and highlighting, chemical hair relaxing and perming, facial treatments, hair removal/waxing, makeup application, manicuring and pedicuring, artificial nails, and salon management.
Vogue Beauty College owner, Charles Oman stressed the significance of targeting training prior to licensure, which sets the school apart from others. “Most school programs take the full 1,500 hours before the written exam; we think it’s important to get the state written exam behind (students) after 1,000 training hours, so they can concentrate on their career. The last 500 hours are dedicated to giving students prolonged skills to go directly into the job market.”
Gaining practical training in a clinical setting, students enrolled in Vogue Beauty College’s cosmetology program must qualify in three of the six certification programs to become fully certified cosmetologists. “Vogue Beauty College far exceeds any accreditation requirements because we’ve spent 15 years developing these specialties,” explains Oman. “We do extra work, so the student can become certified.”
Vogue Beauty College’s 600-hour course in manicuring involves hands-on training in basic manicure and pedicure, application of artificial nails (fiberglass nails, gel nails, tips and wraps), hand and arm massage, paraffin treatments, oil manicure, French manicure, stain removal, repair work, and salon management.
The skin care/esthetician program entails 750 course hours with an in-depth curriculum in anatomy and physiology, facial treatments, facial massage, makeup application, color psychology, hair removal/waxing, aromatherapy, microdermabrasion, extractions, eye tabbing/eyebrow and eyelash tinting, client care, chemistry, client care, salon management, and other related studies.
Licensed by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulations as a private school, Vogue Beauty College participates in the Sallie Mae Loan program, as well as in-house scholarships and long-term financing options.
When asked if “anyone” can enroll, Oman explained “Not just anyone…but we will work with and accept students who demonstrate a strong desire to become professionals.” Additionally, he adds, “We not only give onsite tours, we encourage students to spend some time on campus to get a feel for the environment before applying.”
As an added incentive, Vogue Beauty College boasts its career services through a 40-hour job-ready training program, full and part-time studies (both evenings and days), and convenient Spanish and English programs. As a vital contributor to humanitarian efforts, Vogue Beauty College proudly participates in the Lost Children Program, whereby all income earned on May 25 is donated to this critical fund.
SpaBeautySchools.com recognizes Vogue Beauty College and applauds its quality standards in cosmetology and esthetics training.

Federico Beauty Institute Selected as Top US School for Student
Lauren DeQuiroz’s journey to Federico Beauty Institute took a couple of detours…but those detours were invaluable life lessons that led to a very positive outcome.
Although Lauren always knew she wanted to go to beauty school, she also felt it was important to experience college life. Lauren attended University of Colorado, Boulder for two years before pursuing her dream to become a hair stylist.
Lauren enrolled in an 1800-hour Cosmetology program at a franchise school in the Denver area. But a third of the way through the program, Lauren knew the school was not right for her. She observed very quickly that the school’s curriculum didn’t include materials or student exercises on what it takes to pass the State Boards (Licensure is a requirement to practice Cosmetology in most States).
Finding the Right Pivot Point School
Lauren began her search for a beauty school that met her requirements….a combination of hands-on, real-life practical training in a salon-like environment coupled with a curriculum consisting of rigorous “drills” for students on passing the State Boards. A third factor — locating a school that taught the Pivot Point curriculum – was equally important.
Lauren had become familiar with Pivot Point at the beauty school in Denver. Pivot Point equipment, like tripods, was used at the school along with Pivot Point’s book, “Salon Fundamentals.” Lauren asked and soon learned that the Denver school WAS NOT Pivot Point Certified, and had no plans to change their curriculum in the future.
She began an extensive research project to find the right beauty school that met her criteria. She spent a lot of time on the Pivot Point Academy website and became sold on the Pivot Point hair and skin care education.
We’ll teach you to see, think, create and adapt as a designer – not just duplicate the latest fashion trends – but to be the innovator of these trends. Pivot Point website
Narrowing her search to a handful of beauty schools, Lauren found Federico’s website especially engaging and well-organized. “I especially liked Gary Federico’s video,” she commented. http://www.federico.edu/corporate-video
Equally impressive was Federico’s responsiveness. Lauren said, “Most schools I called weren’t very helpful or willing to quickly send me the information I needed to make a decision. Federico was very proactive…sending me the information I requested right away, then communicating with me via email on a daily basis.
The final step was a campus tour of Federico’s Sacramento campus. Lauren found the staff even more personable and helpful than they were on the phone. She liked the fact that the main office was on site and everyone she needed to meet with – admissions, financial services, career services – was in the same building.
The following factors “sealed the deal” for Lauren:
1) Federico has been in the beauty school business for over 60 years;
2) Federico is a Pivot Point International member school;
3) According to the Federico’s catalog, the school’s Educational Goal is “designated to assist the student’s capability to pass the Bureau of Barbering and Cosmetology licensing examination.”
4) An externship program that places students in Sacramento-area beauty salons;
one day a week, in place of going to class, students can observe the work of experienced beauty professionals.
A Bright Future
Lauren graduated from Federico’s Cosmetology program on Monday, December 22nd, 2008.
She will now put the finishing touches on her resume with Federico’s Student Services support. She would like to find a salon in the Stockton CA area – about an hour from Sacramento – to be closer to some family and friends.
Federico has long standing relationships with Sacramento-area salons who hire many Federico graduates, but Jennifer Hancock, Federico’s Student Services Coordinator, is very eager to help Lauren find a job in Stockton. On Lauren’s behalf, Jennifer will send Lauren’s resume and information about Federico Beauty Institute, to two salons that Lauren has identified in Stockton.
Lauren is confident she will find a great job. “Federico is very well known and admired in northern California. It’s great to have Federico training on my resume.”
Scheduled to take the State Boards on January 16th, is there anyone out there that doubts Lauren will pass her licensure exams, start her beauty career and go on to future success as a beauty professional?

Beauty School Students Benefit From Federico Beauty Institute’S Partnerships With Wella Sebastian And Pivot Point
The descriptive phrase, “mom and pop” has been used for decades to describe a privately-held, family-owned business characterized by strong local community ties and a high level of personal customer service. The phrase, however, too often carries a negative connotation — small business – with all the perceived limitations inherent in those words.
Federico Beauty Institute (FBI) can surely be classified as a “mom and pop” business. The Sacramento-based beauty school, founded in 1942 by James Federico, is a private, family-owned business currently operated by the third generation of the Federico family.
But that’s where the comparison ends. Two of the world’s leading beauty industry giants have recognized the school’s commitment to the highest standards in beauty education and designated Federico as a Wella Signature School and a Pivot Point International Member School.
Educational Partnerships Contribute to Continued Growth
We’ve covered the school’s high quality, innovative curriculum offered to FBI students as a Pivot Point Member School in the most recent issue of this e-newsletter
http://federicobeauty.com/enews/article.php?article=7
As a Wella Signature School, Federico joins the ranks of only four other beauty schools in the U.S. Signature School status earns points for Federico through beauty products’ purchases by customers of the school’s boutique and beauty services clinic, which then translates into both educational benefits and purchasing power for FBI students.
Points earned by Federico are “redeemed” for enrollment in Wella’s Advanced Instructor Seminars for FBI’s professional, tenured instructors. Advanced Training for instructors keeps FBI students on the cutting edge of beauty trends and techniques. Additionally, Federico students have access to Wella, Sebastian and Graham Webb products from Federico’s on-campus beauty boutique — offered at salon cost!!
With these strong educational partnerships between Federico, Wella Sebastian and Pivot Point International, the school’s mission is fulfilled everyday: ”to hold the highest standards in beauty education so we can produce future leaders of the beauty industry.”

How to Afford the Beauty College in California of Your Dreams
Attending a beauty college in California can be the best thing you have ever done to advance your career as a salon professional. However, it can also be one of the heftiest investments you will ever have to make. The cost of attending a beauty college in California has drastically increased over the past 10 years, even outpacing inflation (and probably the rate of return in your savings account).
Still, while paying for an education at a beauty college in California may pose a challenge, it is definitely not an insurmountable one. With the right combination of hard work, discipline, ingenuity and luck, just about anyone can figure out a way to pay for a degree from a good beauty college in California.
Just like all of the other colleges and universities from across the country, many beauty colleges in California offer financial aid and scholarships to those who qualify for them. Some may be need based, while others are based on merit alone. But either way, if you are thinking about attending a beauty college in California, you should definitely apply to every scholarship that you can find.
In addition to applying to scholarships and grants offered by the beauty colleges in California themselves, you should also apply any federal and outside scholarships that you qualify for. There is a lot of money out there that can help cut down the costs that go along with attending a beauty college in California, all you have to do is make the effort to look for it and get it. Search online, buy scholarship searching tip books and do utilize every resource you can to find the money that is available. Also, make sure that when you apply for the scholarships your applications are free of any errors in spelling or grammar.
If you are not currently a state resident but still want to go to a beauty college in California, you also have to factor in the cost of moving to your budget. In addition to paying for the transportation to the city that the school is in, you will probably have to pay for a security deposit and one months rent in advance to get into a house or an apartment. Usually, scholarships will not pay for those types of expenses, so you may have to take out a student loan to give you the extra money you will need.

How Much Does it Cost to Go to a Beauty College?
The cost of attending a beauty college varies pretty drastically, depending on where the school is located, how prestigious the beauty college is and what kind of specializations it offers. Typically, the average beauty college costs between $5,000 and $12,000 from the day classes begin to the time the student graduates.
That said, there are also a lot of external fees that are associated with beauty colleges that are not encompassed by the above figure for tuition. For instance, a professional set of hair cutting scissors can cost hundreds of dollars. On top of that, many beauty colleges charge fees for materials, including the dyes and perm solutions, smocks and other additional charges that are similar to the lab fees incurred by biology students.
Still, the $5,000 to $12,000 it costs to attend a beauty college is not that much money, considering how much cosmetologists make these days. In Indianapolis, Indiana for example, the average hair stylist makes more than $35,000 per year, not including tips and freelance work that is often off the books and free of taxation. With that kind of earning power, a good stylist can pay off student loans in no time.
While it may not take long to pay off the loans from attending a beauty college, getting the loans in the first place can be fairly difficult. In fact, unless a student can prove that the program he or she is entering into is centered on a degree, the student is unlikely to qualify for most private, federal and state loans.
Fortunately, there are lots of loans that potential beauty college students can apply for that are specifically for people in professional and trade programs. A quick Google search for beauty college school loans will bring up more than 300,000 responses. Additionally, many beauty colleges offer financial aid to those who qualify based on need, merit or both. Scholarships are also a viable option if the beauty college student can demonstrate that he or she has what the scholarship committee is looking for.
Additionally, many beauty colleges will help recent graduates find work in the industry, cutting down the time graduates are out of work (and out of money to pay back the loans). All in all, attending a beauty college is pretty affordable, even for those without a lot of money to begin with. It may take a little initiative and hard work, but paying for a beauty college education is definitely doable.
